Nalanda Medical College has taken strong action in a ragging case. All 146 students of the 2025 batch have been suspended for three months over the ragging of newly admitted students.
According to Principal Prof Usha Sharma, the 146 students of the 2025 batch have been barred from attending classes till January 2027. She said the students accused of ragging have also been ordered to vacate the hostel and leave the college campus within 24 hours.
It is alleged that some students took junior students to the rooftop late at night, around midnight, and ragged them. A "rule book" also surfaced on social media in the college's name, listing several rules and instructions for junior students.
After this came to light, the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the Bihar government's Public Grievance Commission sought an explanation from the college. An "anti-ragging committee" was then formed at the college. The committee questioned students of the 2023 to 2026 batches for about three hours. After the questioning, the 2025 batch was suspended, while notices have been issued to the 2023 and 2024 batches.
As the inquiry widened, senior students of the 2023 and 2024 batches also came under its scope. These students have been suspended from classes until further orders and told to vacate the hostel immediately.
Before the ragging case surfaced, the college had recently raised its MBBS seats from 150 to 200. It is alleged that students of the 2025 batch ragged students admitted in 2026 against these additional seats.
Following the incident, the administration has also asked hostel wardens to remain alert. The college says close watch in the hostel is essential to prevent incidents such as ragging. It has also had new students sign an undertaking that they will not indulge in ragging.
Evidence related to the alleged ragging and the circulation of the rule book has been sent to the cyber cell for investigation. The probe will establish who prepared the document, who circulated it and whether anyone else had a role. The college has also written to the Bihar government, requesting appropriate legal action based on the outcome of the investigation.
