Nagpur: Woman held for stealing gold chain from passenger's purse in e-rickshaw

The anti-chain snatching squad of the Nagpur Crime Branch has arrested a woman on the charge of stealing a gold chain from the purse of a passenger travelling in an e-rickshaw. Police have recovered the stolen chain from the accused. It is valued at about Rs 1 lakh.

The incident took place within the limits of Ajni police station.

According to police, Meena Hatmode, 54, was travelling by e-rickshaw from Tukdoji Putla towards Medical Square on September 1. Police said an unidentified woman allegedly took advantage of the passenger's attention being elsewhere during the ride. She is alleged to have taken the gold chain out of the purse at that time.

Hatmode later discovered that her chain was missing. She then went to Ajni police station and filed a complaint.

After the complaint, the anti-chain snatching squad of the Crime Branch began an investigation. Police carried out a technical probe and also acted on confidential information received during the inquiry. On the basis of these leads, they detained Usha Dungo, 40, a resident of Rahatenagar Toli in Ajni.

Police said that during questioning, the accused allegedly confessed to stealing the gold chain. Police then recovered the stolen chain from her. The recovered jewellery has been valued at about Rs 1 lakh.

Usha Dungo was later handed over to Ajni police for further legal action.

The Crime Branch investigation is continuing. Police are now also checking whether the accused has any hand in other, similar thefts in the city.
