Woman, 61, killed by speeding truck at Nagpur's Freedom Park square; driver flees

A 61-year-old woman died after being hit by a speeding Eicher truck at Freedom Park square, under the Sitabuldi police station limits in Nagpur, on Wednesday afternoon. The truck driver is alleged to have fled the spot without stopping to help the critically injured woman. Police are now searching for him.

The deceased has been identified as Chandrakala Ramdayal Rode. She lived at Plot No. 40 in the Radhanagar area on Narsala Road in Dighori.

According to police, the fatal accident took place at around 2.30 pm on November 4, 2026. Chandrakala was walking to the Railway Station branch of the State Bank of India at the time. She was going to the bank to enquire about her provident fund (PF).

As she reached Freedom Park square, an Eicher truck with registration number MH-40-N-4449 hit her hard. The truck is alleged to have been driven at high speed, rashly and negligently.

Chandrakala was critically injured in the collision. The driver still did not stop. Instead of stopping to make sure the injured woman received medical help, he is alleged to have fled.

The injured woman was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where doctors declared her dead during treatment.

Her son, Amol Ramdayal Rode (35), filed a complaint in the case. Based on it, Sitabuldi police have registered a case against the unidentified truck driver under Sections 106(1) and 125(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 134, 177, 184 and 187 of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Police have launched a search to trace and arrest the absconding driver. They said further investigation into the case is under way.
