Kalyan woman says husband framed her over his "death"; DNA report after 4 years shows body was not his
A Kalyan woman who went to police with a domestic violence complaint says she was arrested over her husband's supposed suicide; an RTI-obtained DNA report says the body was not his.
A woman from Kalyan alleges that she went to the police to file a domestic violence complaint but was instead trapped in a false case. She is identified as Namrata (name changed). She alleges that her husband colluded with the police to implicate her in the case of his own death. Four years later, a DNA report obtained under the Right to Information (RTI) Act says the body found in the creek was not her husband's.
The case began in September 2022, when Namrata went to Navghar police station with a complaint against her husband. She alleges that the police, instead of taking the complaint, argued with her, threatened to implicate her in a false case and also beat her.
On September 19, Namrata then filed a report saying her husband had left home. The events that followed were shocking. According to the police, the body of a man was found in a creek the day after the complaint. The body was not shown to Namrata. The husband's brother identified it as his brother's. The police then registered a serious case against Namrata for abetting her husband's suicide and arrested her.
Namrata kept saying that the body found in the creek was not her husband's, that he was alive and that several people had seen him. She alleges that the police and her in-laws ignored her, declared her mentally ill and sent her straight to a mental hospital. DNA samples of the husband's brother and son were taken to identify the body, but the report was kept hidden from her.
After returning from the mental hospital, Namrata repeatedly asked for the DNA report. When the administration kept stalling, she used the Right to Information Act directly. The report, which reached her after about four years, clearly stated that the body found in the creek was not Namrata's husband's. The disclosure has borne out her account. She says her husband hatched the entire conspiracy with the help of the police.
Namrata has now approached the court. She has sought stringent action against her absconding husband, his brother, his brother's wife and the policemen who she says took part in the conspiracy.
