The Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) approved 35 resolution plans in the July-September 2026 quarter. The plans are together worth more than Rs 4,189 crore, and the Mumbai bench ranked first in the country.

All benches across the country together approved 107 plans in the quarter, with a total value of Rs 11,071.17 crore. The 35 plans from the Mumbai bench are part of this figure. It is the highest number of plans approved in a single quarter since the tribunal was established.

According to figures released by the NCLT, the Mumbai bench approved about one-third of the plans cleared across the country. Mumbai accounts for about 38 per cent of the total amount approved. After Mumbai, the Principal bench in New Delhi approved 29 plans. The Chandigarh bench cleared nine and the Ahmedabad bench eight.

The performance in the second quarter of the current financial year is much better than in previous years. In the same quarter of 2025-26, 60 plans were approved, followed by 57 in 2024-25 and 82 in 2023-24.

In the first quarter of the current financial year, 78 plans were approved. The number of plans approved in the first half has thus risen to 185. A total of 1,735 plans have been approved since the tribunal was established.

Challenges of a shortage of members and a lack of infrastructure persist amid the rising workload. Besides the president, 62 posts of members are sanctioned, but 48 members are currently working and 14 posts are vacant. Four more members are due to retire by the end of this year.

Currently, 13 courts function for the full day and 18 courts for half a day. To bring down pending cases, older cases are being given priority, hearings are being planned and the work is being monitored regularly.

The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of questions on appointments and infrastructure at the NCLT. The Centre has been directed to assess the infrastructure of the regional benches and submit a report.
