Completing an MBBS is a big achievement for students who want to become doctors, but many medical students do not stop there. They decide to specialise in a particular disease or area of treatment. For that, after MBBS they must clear the NEET-PG examination and take admission to a postgraduate course.
The natural question is which medical field has the most seats after MBBS and in which subject students most often pursue an MD. According to the NEET-PG seat matrix of the National Medical Commission (NMC), MD General Medicine had the most seats, at 5,654.
Under the seat matrix issued by the NMC, a total of 52,173 seats were recorded in broad speciality MD, MS and PG diploma courses for the academic session. Of these, the largest number, 5,654, were in MD General Medicine.
In this subject, doctors are taught to identify, examine and treat with medicines diseases related to different organs of the body. General medicine doctors treat fever, diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid disorders, respiratory ailments and many other problems.
To understand a patient's illness, they study the medical history, symptoms and test reports. If needed, the patient is referred to other specialist doctors as well.
After an MD in this field, doctors can work in hospitals, medical colleges, clinics and other health institutions. As experience grows, it is also possible to gain expertise in treating a particular disease.
MD General Medicine is a good option for doctors who want to understand and treat different kinds of diseases. In this course, a medical student is trained in identifying serious illnesses, understanding test reports, treating with medicines and caring for critically ill patients.
The distinguishing feature of this field is that instead of one specific organ, attention is paid to many organs of the body and the diseases related to them. For example, if a patient has had a fever for many days, or has high blood pressure along with diabetes, a general medicine doctor can look at the patient's overall health and plan the treatment.
However, more seats in this subject do not mean that admission is easy. Admission depends on performance in NEET-PG, seats available in colleges, reservation rules and the candidate's preference during counselling.
For admission to an MD, candidates generally have to meet the requirements of an MBBS degree, the required internship and other eligibility conditions. They then take the NEET-PG examination. On the basis of the rank obtained and counselling, they get the chance to choose a college and a subject.
While choosing a subject, students should not look only at the number of seats. They should also consider their own interest, way of working, ability to talk to patients and what kind of doctor they want to become.
In short, MD General Medicine has remained the subject with the most seats in the NEET-PG seat matrix. But more seats do not guarantee admission in any subject. The right specialisation is the one in which the student has an interest and which they can pursue with long hard work to serve patients well.
