A security guard at a bridge construction site in Nagpur district's Jalalkheda police station area spotted the cartridges on Wednesday; police are investigating.

About 40 live cartridges were found lying under the bridge over the Jam river near Bharsingi in the Jalalkheda police station area of Nagpur district. The discovery came to light at around 12.30 pm on Wednesday and caused alarm in the area. Finding so many cartridges together also stirred the police department.

A new bridge is under construction over the Jam river at Bharsingi, and a security guard is posted at the site to keep watch. On Wednesday afternoon he had gone under the bridge to relieve himself, when he noticed the cartridges lying there.

As there were a large number of cartridges, the guard informed his senior officials without delay. Jalalkheda police were then alerted.

On receiving the information, Vinod Jambhale, the station house officer of Jalalkheda police station, reached the spot with a police team. Police inspected the site and seized the cartridges found there. As the matter was serious, Additional Superintendent of Police Anil Maske also reached the spot. He took stock of the situation and conducted an inquiry.

The discovery of so many live cartridges under the bridge has raised several questions. Police are examining all aspects, including how the cartridges reached the spot, who hid them there and for what purpose they were to be used.

For now, no official information has emerged about the owner of the cartridges or the person who left them there. No information has been given about any arrest or detention.

Jambhale said Additional Superintendent of Police Anil Maske would give detailed information on the matter. According to him, it will become clear where the cartridges came from and why they were left under the bridge only after the police investigation is complete.
