Traffic police in Nagpur have taken a tough line on e-rickshaw drivers who flout rules and ply on prohibited roads, with Diwali crowds filling the markets.
Traffic congestion in Nagpur is no longer just a problem for motorists. It is testing the time and patience of thousands of people who step out onto the roads every day. E-rickshaws plying in the city have also begun to obstruct traffic.
The traffic police have taken a tough stand as e-rickshaw drivers ignore traffic rules and ply on prohibited roads. Under the rules, e-rickshaws are barred from all state highways, national highways and the Inner Ring Road, as well as 13 routes in the city. The rule was not being enforced strictly.
With Diwali on, markets are seeing heavy crowds, and the movement of e-rickshaws is causing people trouble.
Aditya Mirkhelkar, DCP of the traffic branch, said action would be taken against e-rickshaw drivers who violate the rule.
