Nagpur Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil spoke to journalists at the Press Club on Thursday at a "Meet the Press" event. He set out his position on the city's law and order, rising crime, drug trafficking, women's safety, traffic management and police strength.

Nangre Patil became an IPS officer at the age of 24 and began his career in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. He said that, drawing on nearly 30 years of experience, work would be planned to make law and order in Nagpur more effective.

On drugs, he said the growing use of narcotics among young people is a matter of concern. Strict action is needed against the masterminds behind large-scale drug trafficking and against peddlers, he said. In his view, action alone is not enough to control crime; counselling of offenders and spreading awareness in society are equally important.

Speaking on women's safety, he said the emphasis would be on raising awareness among women and on responding promptly to their complaints. For this, 12 Nirbhaya squads have been formed in Nagpur and beat marshals have been deployed round the clock.

On police numbers, he said that given the city's population and growing needs, it is necessary to deploy the existing force properly. Noting that the city has about 9,500 police personnel, he said a balance is needed between staffing at police stations, basic facilities and recruitment.

He also said the number of serious crimes such as murder and attempt to murder in the city is worrying. Attention will also be given to keeping traffic smooth, resolving parking problems and implementing the hawker policy properly.

Asked about agitations, Nangre Patil said everyone in a democracy has the right to protest, but taking the law into one's own hands in the name of protest is wrong. He added that the police grant permission for protests as per the rules.

Arrangements have been planned for the upcoming Dussehra, Dhammachakra Pravartan Din and Navratri festivities. The commissioner said every aspect is being attended to in order to maintain peace and security in the city.
