Nagpur: Man accused of raping 9-year-old girl dies in hospital after mob assault in Pardi
Narayandas Manmohandas Vaishnav, 35, died at Mayo Hospital after being beaten by a crowd; police have booked 8 to 10 people for the assault.
A case of mob lynching has come to light in the Pardi police station area of Nagpur. Narayandas Manmohandas Vaishnav (35), accused of raping a 9-year-old girl, was beaten up by a crowd. He was admitted to Mayo Hospital in an injured state, where he died during treatment. A few days earlier, the death of a robbery accused after a beating in the Beltarodi police station area had also drawn attention, and the talk over it had not died down when this second incident occurred.
According to police, the deceased was a resident of Pardi. He was originally from Bhilai and had come to Nagpur for work. Police had registered a case against Narayandas under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the POCSO Act on the complaint of the girl's father.
According to the information available, a programme was under way at a Ganpati pandal in the area on Monday night, and the girl was playing with other children. It is alleged that Narayandas, who lived nearby, told her, "Your mother has asked you to stay at home for a while." The girl believed him and he took her to his house. According to the allegation, he committed obscene acts with the girl there. The girl bit his hand and ran out of the house. She told her mother what Narayandas had done. Many people were already present near the pandal, so the word spread across the area within moments.
Within a short time, 70 to 80 people had gathered. Some people dragged Narayandas out of the house and rained kicks and punches on him. It is said that people in the area were extremely angry on hearing that the girl had been raped, and Narayandas was beaten badly.
Meanwhile, the girl's father went to Pardi police station and told police the whole incident. He also told them that people were beating Narayandas. On receiving the information, Pardi police reached the spot. Seeing the crowd, additional staff also had to be called in.
When police arrived, Narayandas was lying injured on the ground. Asked what had happened, he said 8 to 10 people in the crowd had beaten him, but those who assaulted him were not present at that time. Given his injuries, he was admitted to Mayo Hospital for treatment. His statement was also recorded at the hospital.
A case was then registered against the 8 to 10 people who assaulted him, on the complaint of a head constable. Narayandas died at around 2.30 pm on Tuesday. Police Inspector Nanda Mangate said Narayandas had been admitted to hospital for treatment after the assault. Police have also registered a case of accidental death in the matter. The death of an accused at the hands of a mob has raised several questions about law and order in the city.
