Two traffic constables had a narrow escape in Nagpur on Monday evening. They allegedly tried to stop a driver speeding on the wrong side, and he drove his car straight at them to avoid action. Both constables jumped aside in time, and a major accident was averted.
According to police, constables Shankar Musle and Manish Paleria, posted with the Sonegaon traffic circle, were standing in front of Ujjwalnagar Metro station on Monday evening. They were taking action against motorists violating traffic rules.
Jay Bajaj then arrived in a car from the direction of the Manishnagar underpass. Police said he was driving on the wrong side. The two constables signalled with their hands for him to stop.
It is alleged that Bajaj did not stop despite the signal and instead drove the car straight towards the policemen. Seeing the car coming at them, both jumped out of its path and barely saved themselves. There was confusion at the spot for a few moments. A serious accident was averted because both were alert in time.
The policemen then stopped the car and issued a challan for driving on the wrong side as per rules. It is alleged that Jay Bajaj then allegedly began abusing the policemen. He is also said to have threatened to have their uniforms taken off for taking action against him.
Police identified the accused as Jay Megharaj Bajaj (30), a resident of Plot No. 14, Krishnavihar Society, Narendranagar.
The incident was reported to Prashant Pande, senior police inspector of the Sonegaon traffic circle, and to the police control room. On the complaint of constable Shankar Musle, Sonegaon police have registered a case against Bajaj. He faces charges of obstructing a public servant in the discharge of duty, issuing threats and abusing.
Police said the investigation is continuing. Other aspects of the incident are being examined, and the available evidence is being scrutinised.
