The first glimpse of the animated film 'Maha Devi Adishakti - The Legend of Maa Durga' has been released at the start of Navratri. The film will release in cinemas worldwide in February 2027.
The film will bring Indian culture, spirituality and the glory of the divine power of the goddess to the big screen. There is curiosity among audiences about it.
The film is directed by Milind Nandanwar. It is written by noted writer and novelist Akshat Gupta. The producer is Gaurav Malhotra of Artha Entertainment and Animation, while the music is by Shreyas Puranik.
The film will show the goddess's different divine forms and her supernatural strength. From Mahishasuramardini, who slew Mahishasura, to Goddess Kali, who destroys unrighteousness and evil forces, many tales of Adishakti will be brought alive on screen. The makers aim to take Indian mythology to the new generation through modern animation.
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in creating content is growing rapidly these days. At such a time, the makers of 'Maha Devi Adishakti' have preferred traditional, hand-drawn animation. More than 150 animators have contributed to the making of the film.
The decision reflects the view that animation is not merely a technical process but an art shaped by human skill, effort and creativity. The film's team is focused on presenting India's traditional tales artistically on the big screen.
Speaking about the thinking behind the film, director Milind Nandanwar said, "The land of India has always been a land of spirituality, devotion and timeless wisdom. The tales of Sanatana Dharma have shaped our culture, and their messages remain just as relevant from generation to generation. These tales remind us that however powerful evil forces may seem, in the end it is dharma and truth that triumph."
He further said, "We consider it our greatest good fortune that the Mother chose us as the medium to carry her story to her children. It is a big opportunity for us, and also a serious responsibility, which we have accepted with complete devotion and dedication."
The film's producer Gaurav Malhotra also spoke about the thinking behind the project. He said religious television serials and books had played an important role in helping his generation understand Indian culture and traditions. But the way children watch content is changing today. That is why the need was felt to tell these timeless tales in a form that the new generation can easily understand and connect with.
He said 'Maha Devi Adishakti' is an effort to bring India's spiritual heritage closer to the new generation. Emphasis has also been laid on preserving the core spirit and sanctity of the tales. The makers made it clear that this is a film the whole family can watch together.
The film brings together tales of Indian culture handed down through generations and traditional hand-made animation. Its aim is to present the goddess's tales on the big screen while bridging Indian tradition and modern cinematic expression. The first glimpse has come out at the start of Navratri, and the animated film will release in cinemas worldwide in February 2027.
