A case of a fake Instagram account being created in a woman's name has come to light within the limits of Durgapur police station in Chandrapur district. On the woman's complaint, police have registered a case against an unknown person. Police and the cyber cell are now investigating.
According to the complaint, an unknown person allegedly created the fake account using an old photograph of the woman. The complaint also says objectionable material has been posted on the account. Cases of women being defamed through social media are rising steadily, and this incident is one more such case.
According to police sources, on October 4, 2026, at around 12 noon, the woman received a call from her fiance. He told her that a request had come from a new Instagram ID in her name. The woman clarified that she has only one genuine Instagram ID and no other.
Suspicious, the woman searched on her mobile phone. She then found that someone had created a fake Instagram account in her name. The profile of that ID carried an old photograph of the woman. Its bio had objectionable and defamatory statements about staying in a hotel.
When the woman realised that this had been done deliberately and with malicious intent to damage her social standing, she went to Durgapur police station and lodged a complaint.
On the woman's complaint, Durgapur police on October 6 registered a case against the unknown accused under Section 66(C) of the Information Technology Act, 2000. This section relates to creating a fake digital identity.
Under the guidance of police station in-charge Santosh Shegavkar, a team of Durgapur police and the cyber cell is trying to trace the IP address of the fake ID so that a lead to the accused can be found. The investigation is continuing.
