Maruti Suzuki Dzire leads Tata Punch by just 3,898 units in domestic wholesales from January to September 2026, with three months still to go.

Customer preferences in the Indian car market keep changing, yet a few models have held their ground in sales for years. Over the past 15 years, Maruti Suzuki's Alto, Swift, Wagon R and Dzire have repeatedly been the country's best-selling car. In 2024, Tata Motors' Punch changed that picture, becoming the country's top-selling car for the first time. In 2026, the Dzire and the Punch are again in a close contest for the crown.

Take the Alto first. The Maruti Suzuki model stayed at the top for seven straight years, from 2011 to 2017, outselling every other model in that period. In 2011, 3.11 lakh Altos were sold, the highest annual sales for any model between 2011 and September 2026.

The Alto's dominance ended in 2018. That year, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire sold 2.65 lakh units, while Alto sales stopped at 2.57 lakh. The Alto returned in 2019 and took first place again with 2.08 lakh units. That was the last year it finished first.

The Swift and the Wagon R then had their turn. In 2020, the Maruti Suzuki Swift was first with sales of 1.61 lakh units. In 2021, the Wagon R overtook the Swift and kept its place in 2022, when 2.17 lakh units were sold. In 2023, the Swift made a strong comeback, selling 2.03 lakh units to finish first. That year, Wagon R sales were 2,168 units fewer than the Swift's.

Then came 2024, when Tata Motors' Punch made history in the Indian car market. With sales of 2.02 lakh units, it became the country's best-selling car. It was the first Tata Motors model to top the annual sales list. In 2025, however, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire took first place again. With sales of 2.15 lakh units, it finished ahead of the Hyundai Creta and the Tata Nexon.

Now to 2026. According to domestic wholesale figures for January to September 2026, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire is currently first, with 1.86 lakh units delivered in the period. The Tata Punch is second with 1.82 lakh units. The gap between the two is only 3,898 units.

The Tata Nexon is third on the list with 1.76 lakh units. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is fourth with 1.65 lakh units and the Wagon R fifth with 1.64 lakh units. The last three months of the year are still to come, so the final result could change. With the margin between the Dzire and the Punch so slim, sales in the coming months will decide it. The auto industry is watching to see who wins the title of the year's best-selling car.
