Tata's new compact sedan Aeris takes on the Maruti Suzuki Dzire on price, power and features.
A new option has arrived for buyers considering a compact sedan. Tata Motors has launched its new Aeris, which will compete directly with the Maruti Suzuki Dzire. Both cars are available in petrol and CNG versions, with a choice of manual and AMT gearboxes.
There is a clear difference in pricing. The Tata Aeris starts at an ex-showroom price of Rs 5.29 lakh, while the Maruti Suzuki Dzire starts at Rs 6.31 lakh, making the base Aeris Rs 1.02 lakh cheaper than the Dzire. However, the situation reverses at the top end, where the Aeris costs Rs 9.74 lakh against the Dzire's Rs 9.41 lakh.
On engines, both cars get a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine. The Aeris petrol engine produces 86 PS and 113 Nm of torque, while the Dzire generates 82 PS and 112 Nm. The Aeris is also ahead in the CNG version, producing 76 PS and 97 Nm, compared to the Dzire's CNG output of 70 PS and 102 Nm. Both models get 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT gearbox options. The Aeris has a twin-cylinder CNG setup. The Dzire's CNG AMT has a claimed mileage of 36.47 km/kg, while its petrol AMT is claimed to deliver 26.13 kmpl.
The two cars are closely matched on features too. The Aeris gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen, ventilated front seats, an integrated dashcam, rain-sensing wipers and a 360-degree camera. The Dzire, meanwhile, gets a 9-inch screen along with an electric sunroof, wireless charging, a 360-degree camera and cruise control. On safety, both cars get 6 airbags as standard.
On size, both cars share the same length of 3,995 mm and wheelbase of 2,450 mm. The Aeris has a slight edge in ground clearance at 170 mm compared to the Dzire's 163 mm. The Aeris also wins on boot space, with the petrol model offering 419 litres against the Dzire's 382 litres, a difference of 37 litres.
Overall, the Tata Aeris could attract buyers with its lower starting price, higher power and some modern features, while the Maruti Suzuki Dzire remains a strong contender in this segment thanks to better mileage, a sunroof and its established CNG technology.
