CNG car sales cross 1 lakh in August, Maruti leads, Tata Punch surges
CNG car dispatches rose 46.1% year on year in August, with Maruti Suzuki dominant and Tata Motors posting the fastest growth
Demand for CNG cars in India was clearly visible in the August 2026 figures. Companies together dispatched 1,05,249 CNG cars during the month, up from 72,062 units in August 2025, a year-on-year rise of 46.1%. The lower running cost of CNG compared to petrol remains a major reason drawing customers.
Maruti Suzuki continued to dominate the segment. The company dispatched 73,621 CNG cars in August, against 52,214 in August 2025, a rise of 41%, taking its share of the CNG market to 69.9%. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga was the company's best-selling CNG car with 13,352 units, though this was a 1% decline compared to the previous year.
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire sold 12,963 units, a rise of 26%. The WagonR sold 9,405 units and the Brezza 7,608 CNG units. The new Maruti Suzuki Victoris also entered the top 10 with 6,833 units.
Tata Motors recorded the fastest growth during the period. The company's CNG sales rose from 10,805 units to 18,438 units, a growth of 70.6%. The Tata Punch played a major role in this, with 7,767 units of the Punch CNG sold, up 102% from 3,838 units in August 2025. The Tata Nexon also sold 6,178 units.
Hyundai dispatched 10,622 CNG cars in August, with the Aura its best-selling CNG car at 6,485 units. Toyota sold 2,568 CNG cars, a rise of 39.4%.
Notably, the CNG option is no longer limited to hatchbacks or MPVs. With CNG options now available in SUVs and crossovers such as the Punch, Brezza, Nexon, Victoris and Fronx, customers have more choices than before. The August figures suggest the CNG car market will keep growing in the same manner.
