Ashok Chaudhari, a farmer's son, has taken up the pending problems of farmers, farm labourers, destitute persons and senior citizens of Chimur tehsil. He met Collector Vasumana Pant, submitted a memorandum and drew the administration's attention to the issues.
The memorandum raises the stalled water supply scheme, the repeated power cuts to agricultural pumps, water scarcity in villages, delayed grants for the destitute and the question of honorarium for elderly writers and artists. Chaudhari demanded that immediate steps be taken on all these problems.
It has been nearly three years since the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran's water supply scheme began in Shankarpur, yet villagers are not getting the benefit they should. Chaudhari said the scheme's work should be thoroughly investigated, incomplete work completed immediately and regular water supply started in the village.
The rain is unreliable and the paddy crop needs irrigation. With power to agricultural pumps failing repeatedly, farmers are in distress. To prevent damage to the standing crop, the memorandum demands that the electricity needed for farming be made smooth and regular.
It also demanded that villages facing water scarcity in Chimur tehsil be inspected on site and that water be delivered regularly by tanker wherever necessary. Emphasis was also laid on repairing wells and pipelines, restarting defunct pumps, reviving water sources and arranging water for livestock.
Stating his position, Ashok Chaudhari said that the public does not want mere assurances but real solutions to its questions. He said his fight for the rights of farmers, farm labourers and ordinary people will continue. Farmers, beneficiaries and villagers are now watching how quickly the administration acts on these demands.
Elderly writers and artists of Shankarpur applied for the honorarium last year but have received nothing so far. The memorandum demanded that these applications be examined and the honorarium sanctioned to eligible beneficiaries as per government rules.
The grant for destitute, elderly and widowed beneficiaries in Chimur tehsil has been held up for the past three months. Chaudhari demanded that it be credited to their bank accounts immediately. The memorandum also demanded firm arrangements so that the grant is paid before the fifth of every month in future.
Chaudhari thanked Collector Vasumana Pant for taking note of these problems. He also made it clear that he would keep pursuing the matter until these questions are resolved.
