Tech company Apple on Tuesday launched a new device in its smart home line-up. The device is called Apple HomeView. The company claims it marks the start of an entirely new category that brings together entertainment, communication and home automation.
Apple HomeView has a 7-inch Liquid Retina display and a built-in speaker system. It also has a facial recognition feature. It comes with Siri AI support, which will give users personalised answers with the help of compatible Apple devices.
In India, the device is priced at Rs 39,900. In the United States it costs $299, or about Rs 28,000. Customers in India, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the US can pre-order it today from the Apple Online Store and the Apple Store app. Sales will begin on November 13.
The device will be available in four colour options: silver, starlight, rose pink and space grey. A wall-mounted version, called Apple HomeView (Wall-Mounted), has also been introduced.
The display supports True Tone and has a brightness of up to 500 nits. It is housed in an aluminium design. Below it is a dome-shaped speaker base attached to a stainless steel hinge. The company claims the hinge lets users change the angle of the display so that it looks good on a tabletop.
According to the company, the interface changes the information on the screen depending on how far the user is from the device. If a person is in the far corner of the room, simple and basic information will be shown. When the user comes close to the device, the information is displayed in more detail.
Apple will also offer a collection of customisable faces, including Photos, Flow and Snoopy. Users will also get the option to view widgets and shared photo albums.
Apple HomeView supports facial recognition of up to 6 people at a time. The company says this means everyone in the household sees a personalised home screen with their own apps and widgets. Personal information in apps such as Messages and Calendar will be restricted to recognised users, while shared albums and music can be accessed by anyone in the household.
For sound, the display has two custom full-range drivers and a down-firing woofer. The base has two force-cancelling passive radiators.
