Amazon and Tata Motors have announced that they will work together to promote environment-friendly transport in India's e-commerce and freight business. Under the agreement, 3,000 Tata Motors electric trucks will be added gradually to Amazon's transport network in India. The initiative is seen as an important step towards advancing electric freight movement in e-commerce.

The electric trucks will be used for three kinds of work: moving goods within cities, moving goods between distribution centres, and long-distance transport on national highways.

In the first phase, the initiative will begin in Delhi. The aim is then to extend the use of electric trucks on a freight route of about 2,800 km linking Delhi, Bengaluru and Chennai.

The project will place emphasis not only on trucks but also on setting up charging facilities and other necessary infrastructure. Wider use of electric trucks could reduce dependence on diesel and cut carbon emissions from freight movement.

Amazon has set a target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. According to the information available, the company already runs more than 15,000 electric vehicles in over 500 cities in India. By expanding electric trucking, the company is now focusing on electrifying commercial freight movement.

Charging, maintenance and operational support will also be given importance along with the Tata Motors electric trucks. However, the real success of the initiative will depend on several factors, such as the charging network, vehicle performance, battery capacity and operating costs. The collaboration is expected to give momentum to the green logistics sector in India.
