Police said the deceased was Laxman Mahadev Marghade, 60, a resident of Ambedkar Ward in Nagbhid. According to his family, he had been mentally ill for the past 20 years. Because of his poor health, he often left home and wandered on the main roads of Nagbhid village or nearby. Most of the time he slept outdoors, anywhere. His family members tried several times to bring him home, but he would not stay.

The accident took place on Friday, October 30, 2026, between about 11 pm and 11.30 pm. Marghade was walking on the road in front of the RMG College in the Navkhala area on the Nagbhid-Nagpur highway. According to police, the driver of an unidentified vehicle heading from Nagbhid towards Nagpur drove at very high speed, rashly and negligently, and hit Marghade, who was on the road. The impact was so severe that he suffered a serious injury to his left leg and lost a great deal of blood. He died on the spot. The driver still did not stop and drove away.

A team from Nagbhid police station reached the spot the same night on being informed. Police acted immediately and sent the body to the rural hospital in Nagbhid for treatment and post-mortem. Late at night, police contacted the deceased's son, Deepak Laxman Marghade, 36, and informed him of the accident. Shown a photograph, he identified the deceased as his father. After they reached the hospital, doctors declared Marghade dead.

On the oral complaint of Deepak Marghade, a case has been registered at Nagbhid police station against the unidentified driver. It has been registered under Sections 106(1) (death not amounting to culpable homicide) and 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Sections 184, 187 and 134 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The driver has not yet been identified, and there is no word of an arrest.
