The Chandrapur Local Crime Branch (LCB) has arrested an accused who had been absconding for seven years in a fraud case registered in 2019 at Nagbhid police station. The accused is Basan Vanvas Raut, 49, a resident of Pimpri Chunni, Tumsar tehsil, Bhandara district.

According to police, he was detained from Bhandara district on the basis of secret information. The LCB team carried out the operation and then handed him over to the team from Nagbhid police station.

The case was registered at Nagbhid police station in 2019. He was charged with cheating, forging documents and using them under Sections 420, 468, 471 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code. Since then, Raut had not come into police hands. He is said to have kept changing locations and hiding to avoid arrest. The court had declared him an absconder in the case.

When the accused could not be traced for many days, the Superintendent of Police, Chandrapur, and senior LCB officers took the matter seriously. They had issued strict instructions to trace absconding accused. Under this, a special LCB team had been conducting a parallel investigation continuously.

During this time, LCB personnel of the Brahmapuri sub-division squad received important information through a secret informer. Police got wind that Raut was living in or around his native area in Bhandara district.

On this firm information, the LCB team promptly laid a trap and took the accused into custody from Bhandara district. After the legal formalities of the arrest were completed, he was handed over to the Nagbhid police station team so that further investigation and action could be expedited.

Nagbhid police are now also investigating whether he had any accomplices and whether he committed similar offences elsewhere during this period. The action was carried out by the Brahmapuri sub-division squad of the Chandrapur LCB under the guidance of senior officers.
