The Maharashtra government has cleared eight CBSE schools under the Pune Municipal Corporation, which are expected to benefit about 17,000 students.

Pune, October 5, 2026: The Maharashtra government has issued a no-objection certificate (NOC) for starting eight new Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) schools under the Pune Municipal Corporation. About 17,000 students in the city are expected to get national-level education in the English medium as a result.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Pavneet Kaur said the approval was an important step towards strengthening the civic body's education system. She said children in municipal schools would get better educational opportunities.

According to Kaur, students in municipal schools often face difficulties in gaining admission to national-level institutions and in preparing for competitive examinations, because they have limited familiarity with the national curriculum. It is expected that once the CBSE schools start, students will be taught according to national educational standards and the gap will be bridged.

The eight approved schools will be in the areas of Warje-Karvenagar, Wanowrie, Hadapsar-Manjri, Yerawada-Vadgaonsheri, Nagar Road-Wagholi, Sinhagad Road and Kondhwa-Undri.

The approved schools and their areas are: A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Karvenagar (Warje-Karvenagar); School No. 62 B, Wanowrie (Ward No. 18); Ramchandra Bankar (Hadapsar-Manjri); Lahuji Salve, Yerawada (Yerawada-Vadgaonsheri); School No. 83 B, Hadapsar (Hadapsar-Manjri); School No. 102 G, Dhanori (Nagar Road-Wagholi); School No. 203 B, Vadgaon Budruk (Sinhagad Road); and New School, Kondhwa (Kondhwa-Undri).

Kaur said the CBSE curriculum would strengthen students' conceptual understanding of core subjects and improve preparation for national-level competitive examinations such as the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) and the National Defence Academy (NDA) examination.

Teaching in English is also expected to improve students' communication skills and confidence, and to widen opportunities for higher education and later employment.

A meeting chaired by Additional Municipal Commissioner Pavneet Kaur was held recently to review preparations for implementing the initiative. It discussed recruitment and appointment of teachers, academic planning, the policy framework, building of infrastructure, and school management and administrative arrangements.

Under the proposed implementation plan, classes in all eight schools will start in phases from the 2027-28 academic year.

The initiative aims to strengthen the civic body's education system by giving children in municipal schools a curriculum recognised across the country.
