Pimpri, October 27, 2026: A 40-year-old head constable posted with the anti-narcotics squad of the Pimpri Chinchwad Police died of a heart attack late on Sunday night. A raid was under way in Sant Tukaram Nagar on people allegedly selling MD drugs. During it, a suspect tried to flee, and the head constable's health deteriorated as he chased him.
The deceased has been identified as Javed Rafiq Bagsiraj, a resident of Morwadi in Pimpri. His colleagues had caught one suspect near an interior housing society in Sant Tukaram Nagar. When the second suspect ran off, Bagsiraj ran after him. While running, he complained of severe chest pain and then collapsed.
Fellow policemen rushed him to the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation's YCM Hospital. There he suffered another cardiac arrest and died.
The police had received prior information that two suspects were coming to the area to sell MD drugs. Bagsiraj informed his senior officers and laid a trap with his team. The team managed to catch one suspect, while the other began to flee. Bagsiraj had run after him to catch him.
Bagsiraj joined the Pune city police in 2010. For the first eight years he served at the Hadapsar and Mundhwa police stations. When the Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissionerate was formed in 2018, he moved to this force and served at Pimpri police station. He was then sent to the Crime Branch. At the time of his death he was posted with the anti-narcotics squad.
His last rites were performed with state honours on Monday at a cemetery in Kasba Peth, Pune.
Bagsiraj is survived by his parents, brother, wife, a 12-year-old daughter and a seven-year-old son. A police team thus lost a colleague during an operation to catch drug sellers.
