Pimpri Chinchwad traffic police have cracked down on motorists violating number plate rules. Between January 1 and October 25, 2026, fines were imposed on 2,468 vehicles that were plying without number plates or with old plates that did not meet the norms. A total of Rs 12.77 lakh was collected in fines. The information emerged from Pimpri Chinchwad on October 27, 2026.

Under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, every vehicle must carry a High Security Registration Plate (HSRP). The plates are meant to curb criminal activity, prevent the misuse of fake number plates and help trace stolen vehicles.

Despite this, many motorists have continued to ignore the rules. The deadline was extended several times and awareness campaigns were run repeatedly, yet the situation has not changed. For this reason, the traffic police have stepped up checks at the city's major intersections.

The action over the past 10 months covered two-wheelers, four-wheelers and commercial vehicles. Cases were registered against 2,468 drivers in all. Some were booked for driving without a number plate, some for using a damaged or illegible plate, and some for not fitting a government-approved HSRP. The total fine came to Rs 12,77,500, imposed through e-challans.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Vikrant Deshmukh has appealed to vehicle owners to get an HSRP fitted at the earliest through the authorised website.

He said, "Vehicle owners should get the HSRP number plate fitted through the official website so that they can avoid punitive action and their vehicle remains compliant with the rules. The checking drive will be intensified, and further legal action will be taken against violators."
