Pune, November 3, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday that the operational metro network in the country has grown from 248 km in 2014 to about 1,200 km now. He said the way people travel within cities has changed greatly over the past 12 years. He was inaugurating Pune Metro Line 3 (Pink Line) by video conference. At the same event, he also laid the foundation stone for four new metro corridors under Phase II.
Modi said the spread of the metro reflects the government's effort to improve ease of living and ease of transportation for urban residents. In his words, "In 2014, when the country gave the NDA the opportunity to serve, we set out with the resolve to ensure ease of living and ease of transportation for the middle class living in cities."
According to the Prime Minister, the metro ran in only five cities in 2014, while today it operates in 26 cities. He said more than one crore people travel by metro every day.
Pune Metro Line 3 connects the Hinjewadi IT hub with Shivajinagar. It is 23 km long and cost an estimated Rs 8,300 crore or more to build. Modi said the new corridor would improve connectivity, cut travel time and ease traffic pressure. IT professionals travelling from Hinjewadi to other parts of Pune would benefit in particular. He said, "The expansion of the Pune Metro will improve connectivity, save travel time and increase the city's productivity."
The four corridors for which the foundation stone was laid under Phase II are Lines 2A, 2B, 4 and 4A. An investment of about Rs 13,500 crore is estimated for them. The lines will link key residential, commercial and IT areas of the city.
Referring to Maharashtra, Modi said the operational metro network in the state has grown from 11 km in 2014 to about 200 km. Work is also under way on more than 680 km of metro lines. He added that more than Rs 2.5 lakh crore is being invested in metro infrastructure across Maharashtra.
Describing Pune as an important centre for IT, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, startups, innovation and manufacturing, the Prime Minister said strong metro connectivity would give fresh momentum to the city's growth.
He also called it significant that Pune Metro Line 3 is being built on a public-private partnership (PPP) model. According to him, infrastructure work can speed up when the government and the private sector come together. Modi said better urban infrastructure would contribute to the country's economic progress. He appealed to local bodies and private stakeholders to work together to make smaller cities growth centres.
In his address, the Prime Minister expressed concern over the difficulties Maharashtra's farmers are facing because of bad weather. He assured them that the Centre and the NDA government stand with them. He appealed to people to ensure that affected farmers and rural families can also celebrate Diwali.
