Section 111 of BNS on organised crime added against accused in Tiger Shroff firing case

Mumbai Crime Branch has invoked the organised crime provision of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against the accused in the firing on actor Tiger Shroff's car; seven people have been arrested.

The Mumbai Crime Branch has taken a significant step in its investigation into the firing on actor Tiger Shroff. Police have added Section 111 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the accused. The section deals with organised crime.

The case had earlier been registered under sections including attempt to murder and the Arms Act. With the organised crime section now added, the scope of the investigation has widened.

Section 111 of the BNS covers organised crime, which is a crime that is becoming a serious threat to society with each passing day. It covers offences such as extortion, illegal land grabbing, contract killing, economic offences, cyber crime, and organised trafficking in narcotics, weapons or human beings.

If a death results from organised crime, the provision is death or life imprisonment on conviction, along with a fine of not less than Rs 10 lakh.

For conspiring, attempting, abetting or being involved in organised crime, the punishment, depending on the nature of the offence, can range from a minimum of five years to life imprisonment. A fine of not less than Rs 5 lakh may also be imposed.

Those who knowingly harbour or conceal people involved in organised crime can also face strict action under the relevant provisions. The law likewise provides for action against those who hold property earned through organised crime.

The addition of Section 111 in the Tiger Shroff firing case is being seen as an important development in the direction of the investigation. However, the charges against the accused will be established during the judicial process.

The firing took place on Sunday evening in Mumbai's Juhu area, when Tiger Shroff's car was shot at. Shroff had a narrow escape, but his driver and another person were injured.

Within 15 hours of the incident, the Mumbai Police Crime Branch arrested all three accused in the attack from Kota railway station. Four more people have since been arrested, taking the total to seven, including the three shooters.

Police have arrested two young men and two women for helping to supply weapons to the attackers. The case is reported to be linked to gangster Anil Pandit, an associate of the Lawrence gang. He is alleged to have planned the attack.

The investigation is continuing. The final conclusion on the role of all the accused and their links with one another will emerge only from the police investigation and the evidence gathered.
