Guests fell ill with vomiting and dizziness after a wedding meal at Nahur West on Sunday; police have booked the caterer and food samples have been collected.

A wedding celebration in Nahur West, Mumbai, turned into a hospital ordeal on Sunday. After the wedding feast at Nalanda Buddha Vihar hall, several guests complained of vomiting and dizziness. Their families spent the night outside hospital wards in distress. Those taken ill included the new bride and her younger sister.

Around 400 to 500 guests attended the wedding. Food poisoning is suspected in 70 to 100 people after the feast. At least 31 people were taken to different hospitals for treatment.

Rajusingh Rathod, chief medical officer of MT Agarwal Hospital, said that around 11.30 pm on Sunday, six men, 18 women and two children were admitted with complaints of vomiting and dizziness. "All of them are stable now. Food samples have been collected and will be sent to the police," Rathod said.

Ajay Pahurkar (26), a relative of the family, said another milk-based sweet was served after the gulab jamun ran out, and the trouble began soon after. He said the situation began to look serious when some elderly women in his family started vomiting and feeling dizzy. Another relative, who had come from Akola, also complained of dizziness after eating the sweet.

According to preliminary information, Kalash Caterers of Nahur ran short of food during the event and arranged additional sweets from outside. These items are now being examined.

Bhandup police have registered a case against Mulsingh Harisingh Rajpurohit, owner of Kalash Caterers in Nahur, and others. Police said Rajpurohit runs the catering firm's operations. The accused have been booked under sections of the BNS along with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

DCP (Zone East III) Abhay Singh Deshmukh said around 400 to 500 people were present at the wedding. According to him, about 70 to 100 people who ate in the last batch complained of health problems and were taken to hospital. All are being treated. Deshmukh said the situation is being monitored and necessary action is being taken.
