Whether on the road, in a local train or on a BEST bus, every journey is putting Mumbaikars' lives at risk, a question now being raised. Accidents after local services come to a halt, falls from local trains, accidents caused by the rush to cross platforms when local services deteriorate, BEST bus accidents and accidents in which people are crushed under the cars of the wealthy were already occurring. Now oil spilled on a road has also led to a string of accidents. Ordinary Mumbaikars are demanding that the administration immediately put measures in place and stop such accidents.
Only six days earlier, the bodies of three people were found on railway tracks in Mumbai. That day, many local trains were stuck for 10 hours and passengers had to walk along the tracks. A fire near Kanjurmarg station had disrupted Mumbai's transport system. It upset the signal system on the Vikhroli-Thane route.
Two bodies were found in the Ghatkopar-Vikhroli section, while another person died in a rail accident at Bhandup. Officials said the dead were crossing the tracks when they were hit by a train.
Because of the signal fault, local services on the main line had to be suspended completely for several hours, causing hardship to thousands of passengers. A fire in the relay room of Kanjurmarg station caused the signal system to fail, disrupting services on all four local lines. Services were restored by evening, however. According to railway officials, the fire in the Kanjurmarg signalling hut affected about 24 signals on all six lines between Kanjurmarg and Bhandup stations.
