Food poisoning is suspected after guests at a wedding in Nahur West, Mumbai, developed vomiting and diarrhoea; the cause is yet to be established.

About 70 to 100 people fell ill after eating at a wedding in Nahur West, Mumbai, on Sunday, November 1. Food poisoning is suspected. The bride and groom were among those who fell ill. The ceremony was being held at the Nalanda Buddha Vihar hall.

At least 31 people were admitted to hospital after complaining of vomiting and diarrhoea. The patients were taken to nearby hospitals, where they are being treated.

DCP Abhay Singh Deshmukh (Zone East 3) said: "There were about 400 to 500 people at the wedding. Of those who ate in the last batch, about 70 to 100 reported health problems and were taken to hospital for treatment. Of them, 22 have been admitted to Agrawal Hospital, four children to Kamgar Hospital and five to hospitals in Vikhroli. All the patients are stable and are being treated. The situation is being monitored and necessary action is being taken."

Police said those who fell ill were among the guests who ate in the last batch at the wedding feast. They began showing symptoms shortly after the meal and were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Dr Kailash Marskole, medical officer at MT Agarwal Municipal General Hospital, speaking about the wedding in the Bhandup area, said: "27 patients have been admitted. They had started vomiting and having diarrhoea. They had indigestion after eating at a function. They reached here at 11.40 pm. All 27 patients are stable at this time."

Family members have demanded an investigation into the food served at the wedding. They have also asked for action against whoever is responsible, including the caterers and food suppliers.

The actual cause of the food poisoning is not yet known. Officials are monitoring the situation. Further investigation is expected to clarify whether the food served at the wedding was spoilt and whether it was the reason people fell ill.
