Registration of every birth and death in Yavatmal district must be done within the prescribed time. Use of the central government's Civil Registration System (CRS) has now been made mandatory for this. Collector Vikas Meena said no fee is charged for registration done within 21 days of a birth or death. He has therefore asked people in the district to register on time.

A district-level birth and death registration coordination meeting was held at the Collector's office on Tuesday. Meena briefed the officials concerned on the provisions of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, the registration process and the issue of certificates.

Registration of all births and deaths is now compulsory on this online CRS of the central government. All registrars have therefore been told to issue certificates only through the online system. Under the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, only birth and death certificates issued through CRS will now be valid and accepted for all government work.

An event must be registered at the local registrar's office within 21 days. No fee will be charged for registration in this period, and no approval or order is needed. Registrars have also been made responsible for handing over the certificate immediately after registration.

In case of delay, the process varies with the period. For registration between 21 and 30 days, the certificate can be obtained at the local registrar's office on payment of a late fee. For registration after 30 days and within one year, an application must be made to the local registrar, and approval of the District Health Officer is required.

If the delay is between one and two years, an order from the concerned tehsildar is mandatory for registration. The certificate will be issued only after this order is uploaded on the CRS. If the delay exceeds two years, an order from a Judicial Magistrate First Class is mandatory. This order will be uploaded on the system and the certificate issued through the registrars.

Those who hold an old birth or death certificate for entries made before December 31, 2023, and want a new certificate with a QR code, must apply to the local birth and death registrar's office, and permission from officials is required. After the application, the new certificate will be issued with the approval of the Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Panchayat), Zilla Parishad Yavatmal. In urban areas, the certificate will be issued on application with the approval of the Assistant Commissioner and Additional District Registrar (City), municipal administration.
