Virat Kohli eyes Sachin Tendulkar's ODI records in West Indies series
Kohli could overtake Tendulkar's home ODI run record and reach 15,000 ODI runs during the three-match series against West Indies
The ODI series between India and West Indies is set to begin on September 27. The BCCI has announced the India squad, which includes both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, meaning the two senior players will feature in the series. All eyes will be on Virat Kohli's batting in particular, as he has a chance to break two big records held by Sachin Tendulkar.
The tour is also significant for the Indian team as it is seen as important preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup, to be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. For Kohli, this is not just a set of practice matches but a big opportunity to create history.
If Virat Kohli bats well in this series, he could become the batsman with the most ODI runs at home. That record currently belongs to Sachin Tendulkar, and Kohli now has a chance to break it. In addition, by scoring well in the three-match series against West Indies, Kohli could also cross another historic milestone held by Tendulkar.
Kohli has scored 14,941 runs in his ODI career so far. He needs just 59 runs in the series against West Indies to reach the 15,000-run mark. Once he completes those 59 runs, he will become only the second player in the world, after Bharat Ratna Sachin Tendulkar, to score 15,000 or more runs in ODIs.
India's ODI squad for the West Indies series is: Shubman Gill (captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ruturaj Gaikwad, KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Dhruv Jurel (wicketkeeper), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Mohammed Siraj, Aqib Nabi, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Naman Dhir.
