Kohli needs two runs for 13,000 at No. 3 in ODIs and one hundred to pass Sachin Tendulkar's List A tally of 60.
The five-match T20 series between India and New Zealand is over. In just three days, the excitement of one-day cricket begins. The two teams will play a five-match ODI series from November 4.
After their success in the T20 series, the Indian team will try to maintain their winning run in ODIs. The series is also important for India with next year's ODI World Cup in mind.
All eyes in the series will be on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The two batted superbly in the last home ODI series, against the West Indies, and similar performances are expected from them against New Zealand. Notably, Kohli has the chance to set two records in this series, which could give him a special place in the history of ODI and List A cricket.
The first record concerns runs at No. 3. Kohli bats at No. 3 in ODIs and his record in that position has been excellent. He now needs just two runs to complete 13,000 at No. 3. If he scores them in the series against New Zealand, he will become the first batter in the world to reach the mark.
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting is second on the list, with a total of 12,662 runs batting at No. 3 in ODIs. The record for the most runs at a single batting position, however, belongs to Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 15,310 runs as an opener in ODIs. Kohli's performance will therefore be watched with keen interest.
The second record concerns centuries in List A cricket. Another big record beckons Kohli in List A cricket too. Kohli and Tendulkar are level on 60 centuries each for the most in this format. If Kohli scores a hundred in the series against New Zealand, he will go past Tendulkar and become the batter with the most centuries in List A cricket. Having overtaken Tendulkar in ODI centuries, Kohli now has the chance to earn this honour in List A as well.
