Vastu Shastra is given considerable importance in Hindu tradition. It is believed that the kind of house one lives in and where each object is placed bring happiness and peace to the home. People think about the main door, the bedroom and the prayer room, but few pay attention to the kitchen fridge. Vastu Shastra has rules on where to place a fridge and what colour to buy.

Every home has a fridge, and it is essential for keeping food fresh. But Vastu experts say that if it is placed in the wrong spot, negative energy enters the home and money troubles are felt.

According to Vastu Shastra, the best place for a fridge in the kitchen is the south-west corner. Placing it in this direction is said to bring stability to the home. The second-best option is the north-west corner. Some experts also say the south-east corner, the west or the north is acceptable for a fridge.

One thing must be remembered: never place the fridge in the north-east, even by mistake. The north-east corner is regarded as the direction of the gods and is considered very sacred. Placing a heavy object such as a fridge there is said to affect the positive energy of the house. If the kitchen is small, make sure the fridge door can open fully and that movement is not obstructed.

In many homes, because of lack of space, the fridge is placed right against the gas stove. This is wrong by both Vastu and science. In Vastu, the gas stove represents the fire element, while the fridge is cold, representing water. Fire and water are considered enemies, and keeping them close is believed to increase quarrels in the home.

Practically, the heat from the gas puts extra load on the fridge compressor. This raises the electricity bill and the fridge wears out sooner. A gap of at least 3 to 4 feet should therefore be kept between the two.

When buying a fridge, people usually look only at design, but colour matters too. White is considered the most auspicious and best. It symbolises peace and cleanliness and makes the kitchen look larger and cleaner. Cream or off-white shades also bring calm and match easily with any kitchen colour.

Silver or steel is the most popular colour at present. It suits a modular kitchen well and is also right according to Vastu. Green stands for growth and prosperity, so those who want something different can choose a green shade or a wood finish. Light blue keeps the mind calm and gives a feeling of coolness.

A few smaller points should also be kept in mind. Never place the fridge in the exact middle of the kitchen; keep it against a wall. Leave a gap of 2 to 3 inches between the fridge and the wall so that air can circulate and the fridge does not overheat. Do not keep junk, dust or spoiled items on top of the fridge, and keep it clean at all times.

If these small points are followed, positive energy will remain in the kitchen and happiness and prosperity will stay in the home.
