For households facing money trouble or frequent quarrels, Vastu Shastra suggests a few remedies. Keeping the home clean and orderly is described as essential to a positive and peaceful atmosphere. According to Indian tradition, these ideas are linked to a home's happiness, prosperity and positivity. It is believed that arranging belongings according to the direction of the house and following certain rules helps improve the atmosphere at home. Some of these rules are set out below.
The first concerns the north-east. According to Vastu Shastra, the north-east of a house is considered important. It is advised that this area be kept clean and open. Heavy cupboards, junk and footwear should not be kept here. Building the prayer room in this direction is considered auspicious.
The main entrance should also be kept clean and tidy. Drawing auspicious symbols such as the swastika, Om or Shubh Labh at the entrance is considered auspicious. It is also traditional to hang a garland of flowers on the door.
For the kitchen, the south-east, or the fire corner, is considered ideal. One should face east while cooking. The stove and the sink should not be placed very close to each other.
The rule for a safe is that it should be placed in the south or west so that its door faces north when opened. The north is associated with Lord Kubera.
In the bedroom, the north or east wall is considered the best place for a mirror. One should avoid placing a mirror in the bedroom in such a way that it reflects the body while sleeping.
At sunset, there should be light near the main entrance and near the home temple, or place of worship. Lighting camphor or incense at this hour is considered auspicious.
On sleeping direction, facing south or east while sleeping is considered auspicious. One should avoid sleeping with the head towards the north. The bathroom door should also be kept closed after use and the space kept clean. According to Vastu Shastra, keeping rock salt in a glass container in the bathroom is advised.
