Two police constables arrested over Gadchiroli woman's suicide

Police have arrested two police constables, a man and a woman, in connection with the suicide of a young woman in Gadchiroli. Both are accused of being responsible for her death. The police acted on the letter the young woman wrote and on a complaint by her mother.

The young woman was from Anjantola village under Kurkheda police station limits. Last year she came to Gadchiroli with the dream of joining the police, took a room in the Lanjheda area and prepared for the recruitment. During this time she got to know Shivkumar Chhotelal Karsayal on Instagram. Shivkumar is 28 and lives in Temli, Korchi tehsil.

Shivkumar was also preparing for police recruitment. The two met more often at the training ground and gradually fell in love. Shivkumar was later selected in the recruitment, but the young woman was not. Shivkumar was posted at the commando training centre in Kitali. Grieved at not being selected, the young woman returned to her village, but her relationship with Shivkumar continued. She hoped she would be selected later and would also marry Shivkumar.

Meanwhile, Shivkumar got to know Ashwini Raut, a woman police constable posted at Gadchiroli police station. Ashwini is 26 and lives in Bodhda, Desaiganj tehsil. In the meantime, Shivkumar drifted away from his girlfriend. He was also not ready to marry, and the young woman slid into depression. During this period Ashwini phoned her and berated her in abusive language. This broke the young woman completely.

Shocked that the person she loved had betrayed her and all her dreams had shattered, the young woman hanged herself at home on September 7. Before dying, she had written her whole story in a letter and left it behind.

The young woman's mother knew of her daughter's condition. She gave the police a complaint stating the reasons for the suicide and demanded action against those responsible. After verifying the sequence of events, Kurkheda police, 52 days later, registered a case against Constable Shivkumar Karsayal and woman Constable Ashwini Raut on a charge of causing the young woman's suicide, and arrested both.

Assistant Police Inspector Priyanka Aghav is investigating the case further under the guidance of Kurkheda police station Police Inspector Ajay Jagtap.
