Triumph now offers three options in its entry-level Bonneville range: the T4, the T40 and the T40 Black. All three motorcycles look classic, but the differences in features and price leave buyers wondering which one to pick.

The ex-showroom price of the Triumph Bonneville T4 is Rs 2.55 lakh. The T40 and the T40 Black cost Rs 2.80 lakh, which means buyers must pay Rs 25,000 more for the T40. The question is what the extra money gets them.

First, the engine and performance. Both the T4 and the T40 have a 349cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine. It produces 29 PS of power at 7,000 rpm and 31 Nm of torque at 5,500 rpm. It comes with a 6-speed gearbox and an assist-and-slipper clutch. The stated top speed of both is 132 km/h. The engine, brakes, suspension and chassis are the same, so there should be no major difference in performance.

Now the features. The T40 gets a round TFT instrument display, cruise control, cornering dual-channel ABS and traction control that can be adjusted as needed. The T4 has a colour LCD display with turn-by-turn navigation. Traction control, navigation, USB charging and riding modes are available on both models. The higher price of the T40 is therefore mainly for the additional rider-assist features and the TFT display.

The design and hardware are also the same on both motorcycles. Both have a tubular steel frame, a 43 mm front fork and twin shock absorbers at the rear with 7-step preload adjustment. Disc brakes of 310 mm at the front and 255 mm at the rear are fitted. Both are 2,140 mm long, with a seat height of 790 mm and a weight of 195 kg. The fuel tank holds 14 litres.

There are differences in colours. The T4 comes in Phantom Black, Carnival Red and Competition Green. The T40 is offered in dual-tone shades such as Aegean Blue-Fusion White, Meridian Blue-Tangerine Orange and New England White-Jet Black. The T40 Black has a matt grey-black finish, black engine parts and a brown seat.

Those who want the same engine and hardware at a lower price can go for the T4. Those who consider features such as the TFT display, cruise control and cornering ABS important can think about the T40. The main reason to choose the T40 Black would be its distinct look.
