Stellantis has drawn up a big plan to strengthen its hold on the Indian automobile market. The company will invest Rs 4,000 crore in India and is preparing to introduce 12 new models across its Jeep and Citroen brands by 2029. Indian customers are likely to get more choices in new cars, and competition in the SUV and other passenger vehicle segments could increase.
According to the company, the amount will be invested over the next three years and is an additional investment. The company's total investment in India is expected to reach about Rs 15,000 crore by 2030. The entire plan is to be implemented over the next three years.
Of the 12 models, seven will be all-new vehicles and five will be major updates. Five of the models are said to be Jeep and seven Citroen. The first launch is expected in the second quarter of 2027.
The company will focus on 90% localisation. Expanding the sales and service network and increasing exports are also part of the plan.
In Stellantis's portfolio, Jeep is known as the premium SUV brand, while Citroen emphasises comfortable travel and distinctive design. Through the two brands, the company will try to meet the varied needs of Indian customers. Full details of which vehicles will be among the new models, what they will cost and which segments they will enter are expected to emerge gradually.
Such a large investment in the automobile sector could boost production, the network of local suppliers and vehicle-related services. Emphasis on building vehicles in India and improving the availability of parts could help keep costs under control. This could eventually affect vehicle prices too, but that will depend on the price of each model and the level of localisation.
Given the demand in India for SUVs and cars with new features, the plan could prove important for Jeep and Citroen. The upcoming models could give customers more choice in design, engine, technology and price. Clear information on whether electric or hybrid models will be part of the plan is yet to come.
