Rajinikanth's new action film Jailer 2 has collected Rs 317.15 crore around the world in the first three days after its October 15 release, giving the 75-year-old star another big opening. Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the film is a sequel to the 2023 Jailer, which broke records in its time and made this follow-up one of the most awaited releases of the year.

The film opened on Thursday with houseful shows and advance bookings worth crores. It took in Rs 59.70 crore in India on day one, and some fans reportedly took leave from work to catch the first show. Friday was a working day, yet collections held up, with the film bringing in Rs 37.10 crore. Worldwide, it had already gone past Rs 200 crore after two days, with a figure of Rs 209.10 crore reported at that stage.

Saturday, October 17, was better still. According to Sacnilk figures, the film earned Rs 47.80 crore in India, about 28.8 per cent more than on Friday. Its India net collection now stands at Rs 144.60 crore and the gross domestic total at Rs 169.65 crore. Overseas markets are estimated to have added Rs 47.50 crore on the third day, which takes the worldwide tally to Rs 317.15 crore.

The Tamil version led Saturday's business with Rs 34.60 crore from 7,802 shows. The Telugu version is reported to have made Rs 8.50 crore and the Hindi version Rs 4.25 crore, while the Kannada version also added to the total. The spread across languages matters for the final figure, and Rajinikanth's pull with Tamil audiences was once again clear.

Rajinikanth returns as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, the retired jailer with the same swagger and style. The cast includes Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa Menon, Vidya Balan and Mithun Chakraborty, and viewers credit them all with holding the film together. The biggest surprise is a pair of cameos by Malayalam star Mohanlal and Hrithik Roshan, and audiences are said to cheer loudly whenever either appears on screen. Overall, viewers describe the film as a masala entertainer built on Rajinikanth's style, action, comedy and emotion.

Attention now turns to Sunday, the fourth day. Trade watchers expect heavy crowds over the weekend, and a further rise could push the film towards bigger milestones and open a debate on Tamil cinema's box-office records. Which of those records Jailer 2 breaks will become clear only from the coming figures.
