Mira-Bhayandar police raided a bar in the Navghar police station area of Bhayandar East and rescued 17 young women from it. Police detained 26 people in all.

Of the 26 detained, 15 are customers. The rest are the bar's managers, staff and a cashier. The operation was carried out under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner of Police Rahul Chavan. The incident has again brought the issue of alleged irregularities in the area's bars into discussion.

According to the information available, when police entered the bar for the raid, they found seven young women on the stage. Ten more were present in the cavity area. Police brought all 17 women out of the bar and rescued them.

Police held 15 customers. Ten others who worked at the bar as managers, stewards and waiters were also held, along with a cashier, making 26 in all.

Police seized about Rs 60,000 in cash and liquor worth about Rs 50,000 from the spot.

It has emerged that the bar's owner and operator fled the spot while the action was under way. Police are searching for them.

It is not yet clear which rules were actually being violated at the bar or what irregularity was going on. It has also not been decided under which sections of law action will be taken in the case. These matters will become clear only after the investigation is complete. Police are investigating further.
