Cyber fraudsters have extorted Rs 8 lakh from a retired scientist living in New Manish Nagar, Nagpur. The fraudsters allegedly posed as police and CBI officers, threatened to implicate him in a sex racket and have him arrested, and used that fear to make him transfer the money.

Beltarodi police have registered a case on the complaint of Madhav Dhondu Nandeshwar, a resident of New Manish Nagar. According to the complaint, the accused kept Madhav and his wife under constant mental pressure, and the money was sent under that pressure.

According to the information, it all began on October 8, when Madhav received a call on his mobile phone from an unknown number. The caller claimed that 18 complaints were registered at a police station in Bengaluru alleging that obscene videos had been sent to girls from his mobile number.

A video call followed, in which a man wearing a police uniform threatened him in the name of an investigation. The accused said Nandeshwar's mobile number had been used in a sex racket and that bank accounts had been opened by misusing his Aadhaar card and other documents.

The accused kept Nandeshwar and his wife under pressure by threatening arrest. Those claiming to be CBI and CID officers also obtained personal information and details of his property from him.

On October 13, the accused told Madhav to transfer money from his bank account. At their instruction, Madhav sent Rs 8 lakh from his State Bank of India (SBI) account at Manish Nagar-Besa to the Kotak Mahindra Bank account of Rajuri Kalyan in Telangana. The accused had assured him that the amount would be returned within three days.

After the money was sent, the accused demanded a further Rs 20 lakh. This demand made Madhav suspicious, and the fraud came to light.

The money was transferred five days after the first call. During this period, the police uniform, video calls and the names of the CBI and CID were used to pressure the victim with one claim after another. Beltarodi police have registered a case on the complaint.
