There is big news for Toyota Fortuner fans. Toyota will give the next-generation model of its popular SUV its global debut on December 1, 2026, which means the new Fortuner will be revealed to the world on that day. Toyota South Africa has confirmed the date. The current Fortuner generation has been on the market since 2016, so the new model is expected to bring the biggest changes in the past ten years. The new SUV is likely to be launched in India next year.
On the engine front, the current 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine is likely to continue. The 48V mild-hybrid diesel setup, like the Neo Drive version sold in India, may also carry on. Both manual and torque converter automatic gearbox options are expected. Select variants may get 4-wheel drive and a low-range transfer case. The 2.7-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine is also likely to continue in the Indian market. All these details are still only likely and have not been finally confirmed.
A major technology upgrade is also expected in the cabin, and the interior is likely to see big changes. The top variant may get a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen. A 360-degree camera, wireless charging, electrically adjustable and ventilated front seats, connected car features and a panoramic sunroof are also likely. Over-the-air software updates may be included as well.
Safety is likely to get greater emphasis this time. The new model may give more importance to Toyota Safety Sense technology. Going by the radar and camera setup seen during testing, Level 2 ADAS is expected. It could include features such as adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking and lane keeping assist.
The exterior design may show a large grille, a raised bonnet, sharp headlamps, bold wheel arches and a newly designed tailgate. A glimpse of a connected LED light bar has also come out. The new model is likely to use an updated IMV ladder-frame platform, while the 7-seat layout may continue. When launched in India, it could compete with SUVs such as the Kia Sorento, Jeep Meridian, Skoda Kodiaq, MG Majestor and Volkswagen Tayron. The company has not yet given final confirmation of all the features.
