The new generation of the Toyota Fortuner, counted among India's best-known and most powerful SUVs, is getting ready to reach the market soon. The company is set to present the SUV in a new, modern form, and car enthusiasts are keenly awaiting it.
Media reports say the new vehicle will first have a large-scale global debut and could then enter the Indian market in the new year. It is said the SUV will be launched in India after the official global unveiling in December. Toyota India is expected to showcase the new-generation Fortuner at next year's Auto Expo.
The new model will show several big changes, from the design to the cabin. Customers had been demanding modern features for several years, and the company is said to be set to deliver them in this new generation.
From the outside, the new Fortuner will be sharper, bolder and more premium than before. Images that emerged during testing suggest it will get a large front grille of new design, slim LED lights and a taller bonnet, which will add to the vehicle's road presence. The size is likely to remain nearly the same as the old model, but sharp lines on the body panels and new alloy wheels will give it a sportier look. New tail-lamps and an LED light bar are also said to be coming at the rear.
The biggest change will be in the interior. The cabin will be more modern and smarter. It could get a large touchscreen infotainment system with wireless connectivity and a fully digital driver display, or instrument cluster. A panoramic sunroof may also be offered, given customer demand. For safety, it is likely to get an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), with features such as automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist. A 360-degree camera may also be offered to make parking easier.
Not much change is expected in the engine. The company's old and trusted 2.8-litre diesel engine will stay, and a petrol option may be available in some markets. Both manual and automatic gearboxes will be offered. A 4x4 option will remain for difficult terrain. An improved suspension setup will make long journeys more comfortable and free of jolts.
The premium SUV enjoys a dominant position in the Indian market, and its sales have recently risen sharply. After launch, it will take on rivals such as the Jeep Meridian and the Skoda Kodiaq.
