The NTA has released the JEE Main 2027 schedule but is holding back NEET UG dates until the Nilekani-led task force reports on exam format and security.

Lakhs of students waiting for the schedule of NEET UG 2027, the country's largest medical entrance examination, may have to wait a little longer. The National Testing Agency (NTA) has released the JEE Main 2027 schedule, but doubts remain over the dates of the medical entrance test. Changes are being made to the examination system, and this is causing the delay.

Taking lessons from the irregularities and paper leaks that marred earlier NEET UG sessions, the government does not want to hurry this time. The NTA wants all arrangements to be in place before it announces the NEET UG 2027 schedule. The dates will not be announced until the new exam pattern, security standards and online mode are finalised.

To maintain confidence in the country's major examinations, the Union government has formed a six-member task force headed by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani. Its main job is to bring transparency to the examination system and to lay down security norms. Teachers, parents, students and experts from across the country have sent the committee more than 50,000 suggestions.

The report was to have been submitted by October 2026. According to a fresh affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, it will now be submitted in January 2027.

This report of the Nilekani committee will decide the future of NEET UG 2027. The emphasis is on moving NEET UG from pen-and-paper mode to a computer-based test (CBT). Nilekani has already suggested that the question paper be prepared with the help of artificial intelligence and printed at the examination centre itself. Conducting the exam in CBT mode requires logistics, computer labs and strong security arrangements. The NTA will therefore take its next step only after reading the full report.

The task force will submit its final report at the end of January 2027. The NTA may then choose February 2027 to fold its recommendations into the examination calendar. If the exam is held online, it may have to be conducted over several shifts or several days, which needs a firm blueprint. Candidates trying to guess the dates now may have to wait until February. However long the wait may seem, it is considered a very necessary step for security in the future.
