A 52-year-old farmer, Manish Raghunath Makode, died in Marda village of Chandrapur district at around 8:30 am on October 8, 2026. He is reported to have taken his own life on his farm. News of the incident spread quickly and left Marda and the surrounding area shaken.
People across Chandrapur district are in shock, and there is deep grief among farmers. In the village, people are asking how a hardworking farmer was brought to this state.
Police's initial inquiries have pointed to repeated crop failure. Questioning at the spot indicated that this was the reason Makode took the step.
The inquiry also found that Makode had no loan from any bank in his name. Bank debt did not emerge as a factor in the questioning, and crop failure has been cited as the reason.
According to the information available on his land, Makode holds jointly owned farmland in Marda mouza under survey numbers 245/A/1, 245/B/1 and 122. The areas of the three plots are given as 0.80, 1.00 and 2.69 hectares respectively.
The family has been plunged into grief. Makode is survived by his wife, two daughters, his mother and two brothers. The entire family is in deep shock.
Police have prepared a preliminary report, and further legal action is under way. Villagers in Marda and farmers across the district are waiting to see what the investigation reveals.
