Large-scale work is under way at the Super Speciality Hospital in Nagpur. The OPDs and wards are being renovated to improve patient care and increase the hospital's capacity. A four-storey C-wing is also being built. Development work has picked up pace at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Nagpur, known as Medical, as well.
Under the plan, the number of beds at the hospital will go up from 230 to 500, or 270 more than at present. This would be an increase of about 117 per cent in bed capacity.
The Super Speciality Hospital currently has nine departments. In some of them, patients get consultation and treatment only in the outpatient department (OPD). For patients admitted under the remaining departments, there are 230 beds in all. The bed capacity is being raised in view of patients' growing needs.
The new C-wing will have a cath lab, ICU, echo testing facility, rooms for heads of departments, a day care centre and a seminar hall. The Public Works Department (PWD) is carrying out the construction at speed. As per the plan, the target is to hand the new building over to the hospital administration by March 2027.
The hospital had continued to feel the need for modern facilities for the treatment of several serious illnesses, including heart disease. The C-wing will strengthen the hospital's infrastructure. The cath lab will widen the scope of heart-related tests and treatment, while the intensive care unit (ICU) will be used for the care of critically ill patients. Echo tests, separate rooms for heads of departments and the day care centre will also be in the same building.
The seminar hall will provide space for academic activities, medical discussions and training programmes. These facilities are expected to make the hospital's functioning more orderly.
Once the bed count reaches 500, the hospital will be able to admit more patients at a time. The 270 additional beds, over the present 230, could prove important for patients battling serious and complex illnesses. However, to meet this target, necessary medical equipment, doctors, nursing staff and other resources will also have to be available along with the building.
According to Dr Sushma Thakre, OSD of the hospital, the renovation work is also progressing quickly. Once the C-wing building is ready, the shortage of space will be resolved, which will make things easier for doctors and benefit patients. The administration's effort is to take bed capacity to 500 after the departments are expanded. Postgraduate seats in some more departments may also be increased later.
