Another case of cyber fraud has come to light in Nagpur. In the Hudkeshwar police station area, an unidentified cyber fraudster targeted a 79-year-old man by posing as an officer of Bank of India. The fraudster is alleged to have obtained confidential information about the man's bank account and withdrawn Rs 8 lakh online from it. Hudkeshwar police have registered a case after receiving a complaint and begun an investigation.
According to the police, the incident took place in the Heritage A building of Atharva Nagari-2 on Pipla Road in Besa. On October 17, the elderly man received a call on his mobile phone from an unknown number. The caller identified himself as an officer of Bank of India and obtained confidential bank-related information.
It is alleged that after getting the information, the fraudster withdrew Rs 8 lakh online from the man's bank account without his knowledge or permission. The man realised he had been cheated only when he learnt that such a large sum had been withdrawn from his account. He then filed a complaint with the police.
On the basis of the complaint, Hudkeshwar police have registered a case under the relevant sections dealing with fraud and the Information Technology Act (IT Act). Police are now trying to identify the accused. Aspects of the transactions involving the defrauded amount are also being examined. Police are continuing to investigate the case.
Cyber fraudsters often pose as bank officers to extract confidential account and banking details from people. Anyone receiving an unknown call should therefore not share an OTP, password or sensitive bank account details. Even if the caller claims to be a bank officer, it is essential to verify the person's identity through the bank's official channels.
