After a request from the Nag Vidarbha Chamber of Commerce, the Nagpur collector revised the borewell digging ban to allow some water-related work.
Nagpur district received less rain this year. As part of measures to save water, the administration had a few days ago directed a complete ban on borewell digging. The ban order has now been relaxed for certain works, and the district collector has issued a fresh revised order on the matter.
Keeping in mind that the ban could cause water problems for citizens, a delegation of the Nag Vidarbha Chamber of Commerce met Nagpur district guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule. The delegation then also met District Collector Kumar Ashirwad in his office and requested relief in the order. The chamber has been described as the leading and apex body of 13 lakh traders in Vidarbha.
Collector Kumar Ashirwad promptly took note of the chamber's request. Following the directions given by Guardian Minister Bawankule, he exempted certain works from the borewell digging ban order. The new revised order, numbered जिनिक/म.स./ने.आ.व्य./कावि 400/2026, was issued on October 31, 2026.
Under the new order, it will be ensured that public drinking water is available equally to all through various government departments, government agencies and local self-government bodies. Works started by the government, or borewell digging works connected to them, will continue. Likewise, works to ensure water for household use and the flushing of old borewells will also continue.
Chamber president Swapnil Ahirkar and past president Ashwin Prakashji Mehadia (Agrawal) thanked Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule and Collector Kumar Ashirwad on behalf of the chamber. They expressed thanks for taking note of the chamber's request, understanding water-related difficulties and giving relief to citizens as well as to professionals who dig borewells.
The information was given in a press release by chamber secretary CA Hemant Sarda. The borewell digging ban had been imposed to save water because of low rainfall, but drinking water, household water and flushing of old borewells have been exempted in the revised order.
