Residents blocked Godhani Road for four hours after a 30-year-old woman died, demanding road repairs and removal of encroachments.
A 30-year-old woman died and her young child was injured in a tragic accident on Godhani Road in Nagpur on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Jyoti Pankaj Phalke. A speeding tipper truck coming from behind rammed her two-wheeler.
The accident took place at about 4.30 pm on Tuesday on Godhani Road, in the Mankapur police station area, in front of Garva Biryani Centre. Jyoti Phalke was travelling on the two-wheeler with her husband and child when the tipper hit the vehicle from behind.
All three on the two-wheeler fell on the road. The tipper's wheel ran over Jyoti's head and she died on the spot. The injured child was rushed to hospital.
Angry residents of the area took to the road after the accident. Their blockade brought traffic on Godhani Road to a complete halt for four hours. They alleged that potholes, repeated digging and encroachments were causing accidents on the road. They demanded immediate repair of the road, removal of encroachments and strict action against rash drivers.
Residents recalled that a young woman had also died in an accident on the same road just 20 days ago. They said they were deeply upset that the administration had still put no lasting arrangement in place.
Senior police officers reached the spot given the seriousness of the situation. A heavy police contingent was deployed, including Additional Commissioner of Police Vinita Sahu, DCP Ramesh Dhumal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Aditya Mirkhelkar and Mankapur zone DCP Annapurna Singh. At about 8 pm, the municipal corporation's chief engineer, Leena Upadhyay, also arrived and directed that encroachments in the area be removed overnight.
Police and municipal officials spoke to the residents and assured them that measures would be taken. The protest was then called off and the road was reopened to traffic. The tipper driver, who had fled after the accident, has been traced and detained by police. Mankapur police are investigating further.
Residents are angrily asking when the administration will wake up after two lives were lost on one road in 20 days. They ask how many more innocent lives will be lost before this death trap on Godhani Road is removed.
