An undertrial prisoner inside Nagpur Central Jail was allegedly attacked by two fellow inmates on Tuesday morning. The incident took place between Barrack Nos. 7 and 8 in the jail's Chhoti Gol section.

According to Dhantoli police, the incident occurred between about 9.40 am and 10.20 am. The undertrial who was attacked has been identified as Vijay Nandlal Rehangdale.

Police said Rehangdale had gone to pray at the Hanuman temple inside the jail. At about 9.40 am, as he was returning to his barrack, inmates Durgesh alias Little Pramod Gupta and Ashwin alias Achchi Mukund Indurkar allegedly stopped him.

The two are alleged to have assaulted Rehangdale without any provocation. They reportedly kicked and punched him and allegedly also struck him with a plastic bucket. Rehangdale sustained a head injury in the attack.

Jail officers and other staff were alerted by the noise. Jail constable Manoj Balu Dhanvat reached the spot immediately with other colleagues. The officials intervened and separated the inmates. Rehangdale was then taken to the jail hospital for treatment.

According to police, another inmate, Surendra alias Monu Manoj Samudre, then created a commotion in the jail. Police said Samudre had no connection with the attack on Rehangdale.

Samudre is alleged to have argued with jail staff. When Nimje, a subordinate-grade employee, tried to calm him down, Samudre allegedly moved towards him, threatened him and tried to stop him from performing his lawful duty.

Following these incidents, Dhantoli police registered a case against all three inmates under Sections 118(1), 132, 115(2), 351(3) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The case was registered on Tuesday itself. Police have begun further investigation into both the assault and the alleged confrontation with jail staff.
