Another case of violence among inmates has come to light at Nagpur Central Jail. On Tuesday morning, an undertrial prisoner was kicked and punched and struck on the head with a plastic bucket. He suffered a head injury. Jail staff reached the spot, brought the situation under control and sent the injured prisoner to the jail hospital.

According to the information available, the incident took place on Tuesday between about 9.40 am and 10.20 am, in the area between barracks 7 and 8 in the Chhoti Gol section of the central jail. Undertrial Vijay Rahangdale was returning to his barrack after offering prayers at the Hanuman temple. Undertrials Durgesh alias Little Pramod Gupta and Ashwin alias Achchi Mukund Indurkar blocked his way. Both are said to have begun assaulting Vijay. He was first kicked and punched, and he was then also reportedly struck on the head with a plastic bucket.

The sudden assault created panic in the premises. Hearing Vijay's screams, prison staff member Manoj Dhanwat, who was on duty, and other staff rushed there. They separated the two sides and took the injured prisoner to the jail hospital for treatment.

Argument with staff who intervened

While the fight was still being brought under control, another undertrial began arguing with the jail staff. According to the complaint given to police, this prisoner is Surendra alias Monu Manoj Samudre. Sub-inspector Nimje tried to calm him, but he did not relent. He is alleged to have kept arguing with the officer and tried to lunge at him. He is also alleged to have tried to intimidate and threaten a staff member discharging government duty.

After the incident, the jail administration lodged a complaint with Dhantoli police. Police have registered a case against Durgesh alias Little Gupta, Ashwin alias Achchi Indurkar and Surendra alias Monu Samudre. The case has reached police on charges of obstructing and threatening staff in the discharge of government duty.

Questions again over jail security

The incident has raised questions about security inside the jail. The questions are how effective the administration's control over quarrels among inmates is, how safe the inmates are, and who is looking after the safety of the staff who are responsible for hundreds of inmates. The focus is now on the jail administration, on whether it treats this only as a criminal case or also seriously reviews the jail's internal security.
